Volvo Drives Technology Forward
Compsoft wins a contract with Volvo IT for a .NET pilot.
AXIS - Volvo IT's Dealer Management Systems Centre has agreed a project to pilot the use of Microsoft .NET technology with its existing AS/400-based application, used by over 10,000 users in 24 countries. Having used Java technology to create a user interface for their iSeries application which manages dealer activities throughout the world, Volvo initially consulted Compsoft when considering the adoption of .NET technology.
"We were extremely impressed with Compsoft's knowledge and experience of the technology and were able to gain an in-depth, relevant understanding of how we could embrace .NET to our advantage," says Tony Harrison, General Manager of AXIS.
Volvo's Phil Robinson, Product Development Manager, identified a suitable pilot project, "we needed a simpler method of regularly uploading suppliers' price data into our parts database. In some cases, the files could be pretty huge and it's critical that the data is valid."
The project covers the creation of a simple-to-use application to allow users with appropriate security to import data from a file, validated against the import profile selected. The application will also provide tools to modify or define new import templates as they are required.
Using .NET data connectors, the application will pass data straight into the DB2 database on the iSeries, avoiding any immediate need to replace it with an alternative database.
